Managing Investment Risk
Generally, the higher the risks the higher the rewards. Unfortunately, with higher risk, the potential for losses increases.
There is no such thing as a risk free investment. Even cash in a bank carries risk, such as a run on the bank or the effects of inflation eroding a low rate of interest.
Figure 1 shows the risk of UK investments. One of the highest risk investments are single company shares, which some people hold from privatisations or employer share options.
Unless you are an experienced investor, it can be hard to know your attitude towards risk, but this is vital when making investment decisions.
